Katatonia, photo from band's archiveThe Polish have a saying “Like in March like in a cauldron”, suggesting that the weather at this time of year can brew up all kinds of strange concoctions. And so it’ll be with Kraków’s music scene. A few gloomy moods and cooler Scandinavian gusts, but no shortage of more heated moments.

Let’s begin maybe with the colder climates. On 31 March in Kraków’s Rotunda the Swedish group Katatonia will be playing. Due to their debut album Dance of December Souls (1993), they are considered to be one of the pioneers of doom metal and were ranked alongside Anathema or Paradise Lost. Work on the second album was interrupted unexpectedly when frontman Jonas Renkse had a few problems with his growling. Since then Katatonia have been heading in the direction of progressive metal and softer rock with quite depressive overtones. The disc released at the beginning of last November A Night is a New Day is regarded by critics to be the most accomplished in their career.

Mad Sin will certainly encourage us to partake in a little spring activity. The Germans belong to the international crème de la crème of psychobilly. Mad Sin’s beginnings date back to 1987. It was then that the trio of friends from Berlin decided to form a group together. In the beginning they played a mixture of psychobilly, country and blues outside shopping malls, receiving money in return from passers-by. Their 1996 album God Save the Sin brought them worldwide recognition. The group began playing concerts with such aces as Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits and Faith No More. Their explosive mixture of rockabilly, psycho and punk rock will be bringing us back to life on 20 March in the Kwadrat club.

A day earlier, on 19 March, star of the Polish scene Lao Che will be playing in Studio. Their output is a blend of many stylistic influences, beginning with smooth ambient and ending with heavy, gloomy and sombre rock. It was a concept album Powstanie Warszawskie (2005) that brought them their popularity. On this occasion they’ll be promoting their fourth disc Prąd stały/Prąd zmienny. In the tracks from their new album, a lot of retro electronics and cold wave sounds can be heard.

In the Loch Ness club will be appearing The Subways – a trio regarded as the hope of British rock. The formation have so far released two albums: Young for Eternity (2005) and All or Nothing in 2008. This year they are due to release their latest disc. Maybe we’ll be able to hear the Subway’s latest hits? Let’s find out on 25 March.
